The Musical Keyboard

The Keyboard is one of the only instruments that can play an entire song. Keyboards are able to do this because both chords (a group of notes) and melody (the higher notes that make the song familiar) can be played at the same time. Because of this every note you hear in a song can be played on keyboard instruments. From guitar chords to upright bass notes, or even strings, the possibilities are limitless. With the right keyboard you can reproduce all the sounds you hear within a song.

So when and where did the keyboard originate? The Hydraulis originated in Greece over 2000 years ago and it is thought to be the earliest keyboard instrument. This instrument used a hand pumped air and water pressure to produce sound. Keyboard instruments have since come a long way. Now there are a variety of keyboard instruments including but not limited to the piano, accordion, clavichord and the organ just to name a few. The synthesizer is an electronic keyboard instrument that can produce the sounds of hundreds of various instruments.

Did You Know?

  • The synthesizer is unique because it can mix the types of sounds that it plays in to make an entire piece of music. Before synthesizers where invented it would take an entire band or orchestra to produce a musical piece.
  • The piano has more songs that have been composed for it than any other instrument.
  • Most piano greats have taken lesson for about 5 to 10 years at sometime within their childhood.
  • The first modern piano was made in 1709.
  • The piano is classified as a percussion instrument.
  • The piano is a percussion because the strings inside are struck not plucked.
  • Pianos should be tuned at least twice a year.
